What’s Up in Ogoniland?

October 7, 2018 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Recently returned AI Tempe member Barbara Taft, and Sumene (Tony) Kaborloomene, an Ogoni who lives in the Greater Phoenix area, and who spent time viewing various sites in the Niger Delta region (Ogoniland), Nigeria, will report on their visit. Amnesty became involved in the situation there when Ken Saro-Wiwa and others protesting the damage done to the Ogoni environment in the 1990s by Shell Oil’s drilling operations, constituted a prominent adoption case. Unfortunately, while AI members were still writing letters on behalf of Ken and the others, the Nigerian government held a hasty trial, convicted Ken and the others, and summarily executed them by hanging. Since then, although both Shell and subsequent Nigerian governments have claimed they are advancing cleanup efforts, the situation on the ground remains tragic. Come to learn about current efforts to rectify the environmental damage and reverse the human costs of this man-made disaster.

Grab a drink or a snack from the Connections Café! Admission is free, but we will be collecting donations for Death Penalty Alternatives for Arizona.

November, we will talk about how to “Build a Longer Table” and welcome refugees to our homes and our communities.
