Standing up for Equality & Racial Justice
August 6 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
We can debate the accuracy of Sacha Baron Cohen’s depiction of our community, but inarguably he struck a nerve. Sometimes it’s painful to acknowledge the truth, but sometimes the truth isn’t as simple as some would like it to be.
In a draft of a statement by the Kingman Progressive Alliance, Julya Carey wrote:
“For those of us whose first reaction (as it should be) was to denounce the statements [made by the participants in the video] … for those of us who consider ourselves informed and aware, this exposure brings opportunity. We have the chance now to investigate our own biases and challenge those around us to do the same. It is time to renew our commitment to understanding each other and our neighbors. We can reach out to learn how the experiences of others differ from ours.”
On August 6th, 2018 the Kingman Progressive Alliance (KPA), The Interfaith Council, and the NAACP will be co-sponsoring a community gathering to discuss the dangers of intolerance and racism and explore possible positive actions we can take to confront the racism and intolerance that is here as well and change the perceptions of those looking at our community from the outside. This will provide an opportunity to share your personal experiences of Kingman. Both positive and negative.
Some of the actions that have been proposed include organizing a rally and/or march, more gatherings (maybe a community-wide potluck dinner?), designing t shirts and bumper stickers, creating an op ed piece(s) for the local newspapers. Please put some thought into other possible actions.
Please note that because the general public is invited we will NOT be meeting at Calico’s.
Join us in downtown Kingman at 6:00 PM on Monday August 6th. All are welcome!
