No Monuments to Genocide: Take Em Down
October 8, 2017 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
The recent resurgence of white supremacist violence in Charlottesville is one painful reminder of how much work we still must do to dismantle white supremacy in this nation. Tucson SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice), joins with LUPE Tucson and a growing national movement to dismantle all shrines to white supremacy, racial violence and colonialism.
The legacies of colonialism are enshrined in names like Christopher Columbus Park, so we support the renaming of the park, and Indigenous-led efforts to replace ‘Columbus Day’ with ‘Indigenous People’s Day’. Racist attacks on immigrants and the violence of border militarization are upheld through living monuments like the U.S.-Mexico border wall, so we join with migrant justice organizations in demanding an end to border militarization, an end to the border wall, and legalization for all. Confederate monuments like the one at Picacho Peak uphold anti-Black racism, so we echo the call to take down all Confederate monuments in Arizona and beyond.
We are collaborating on a series of “This is Racist: TAKE IT DOWN!” actions. Join us for the first in a series of educational actions against these monuments as we label them as what they are: monuments to white supremacy and colonialism, and demand to #TakeEmDown
Join us for the first action at Christopher Columbus Park as we demand to change the name of the park.
