Annexation and De-Annexation: The Debate Over South Phoenix, 1960-1961

March 13, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Bring your lunch at join the IHR’s Humane Cities Initiative for an interactive workshop led by Robert Spindler, Chris Marin and Eduardo Pagan.

Participants will read and discuss original archival materials documenting Phoenix annexation in 1960-1961 and residents’ efforts to reverse the action through litigation. We will discuss controversies of urban renewal and urban space, still relevant issues today as the cityscape of Phoenix continues to be re-imagined. We will also consider the meaning, availability and utility of archival records documenting those events. The goal of the event is to learn about our urban development history and to consider how archival records can enhance student engagement and class instruction. This workshop will be led by Robert Spindler, University Archivist, ASU Library, Chris Marin, Chicano Research Collection Curator Emerita, and Eduardo Pagan, Associate Professor of the School of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies at the ASU West campus.

Participants will be sent a selection of archival documents for advance reading from the ASU Library Greater Arizona Collection about annexation, and copies of the documents will be also made available at the event. Brief background presentations will orient participants to the greater history of annexation in Phoenix and the provenance of the archives. Then participants will join discussion tables to consider the history, how archives represent or complicate our knowledge of Phoenix history and what pedagogical goals might be met by using materials like these. Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch and a colleague to this limited attendance event.

This event is part of the Humanities at Work Series and part of the Humane Cities Initiative.
